Overflowing The Banks

2 October

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.   (Ro 15:13; NIV)

I like it when Paul talks of "overflowing."  We usually think of bad things happening when we hear the word overflowing, like, a river overflowing and flooding a town or having a cup overflow as we pour coffee into it.  Here's the thing about overflowing; when something overflows the entire area around it is affected.  This is the way it should be with our joy, peace, hope, love, and faith.

The early church "overflowed" because no matter where its people went, they could not help but tell others about the love of Jesus Christ.  Even as they fled from those who were persecuting them, they continued to tell others about Jesus.  All those around them were affected, and that is why the church continued to grow.  The people these "Christians" ran into could see something was overflowing from them, and the closer they got, the greater they were affected.

Can those around you see something overflowing from you?  Is the love of Christ confined in you, or do you let him flow freely?  I never want to be full, because full is a constant state, nothing changes.  I would rather be overflowing, spilling out on to others, affecting those around me.  May my love of Jesus and our Heavenly Father never be confined to this body but let it spill out and get the "souls" of others wet.
